Fayetteville State University (FSU) houses over 1,700 students in nine on-campus residence halls and a University-owned apartment complex. Like many colleges, FSU was facing a problem of recruitment and retention. Their solution to attract discriminating students? A brand-new, high-end residence hall, built to exacting LEED Silver specifications for sustainability and energy efficiency. Installing new student furniture that was as highend and stylish as the new Renaissance Hall itself was a big part of FSU’s plan to attract new students. FSU promotes and advertises its green programs to prospective students, so the furniture also had to exemplify the school’s commitment to sustainability as a “core value of institutional operations, planning, capital construction, and purchasing practices.” The residence hall’s furniture had to be durable and low-maintenance. And finally, the furniture had to be affordable. After reviewing proposals from seven vendors, FSU chose Ecologic Furniture to furnish Renaissance Hall’s 338 student rooms and twelve common spaces. In addition to offering the most attractive and stylish designs, Ecologic Furniture’s bid was significantly lower than the competition. Ecologic’s green certifications were icing on the cake. Because it was a new hall, and unlike anything else on campus, prospective students didn’t know what to expect from Renaissance Hall. FSU’s student housing staff was having a little trouble filling the facility. So Ecologic Furniture created a highresolution 3-D rendering of the proposed student rooms, helping prospective students visualize themselves in the high-end new residence.
